The BlackBerry Messenger Service can keep running in India until January 2011, according to the country's Ministry of Home Affairs, but a permanent solution still needs to be found.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in the United Arab Emirates says BlackBerry services can continue to operate as normal because they're now compliant with the UAE's telecommunications regulatory framework. Certain BlackBerry services had been threatened with closure this month after security concerns were raised in August.

A group of researchers from Pennsylvania State University, Duke University and Intel Labs have investigated the behaviour of smartphone applications. After looking at 30 popular Android apps they found that two-thirds of the applications displayed 'suspicious handling' of sensitive data, with half the apps reporting users' locations to advertising servers. In addition, seven applications transmitted the IMEI (serial number) of the phone without any clear consent.

Vodafone UK has changed the password reminder option for its online account management system. A number of reports recently noted that entering (or guessing) a mobile phone number would reveal the user's email address – and entering a user name would do the same.
