16 million 4G LTE customers worldwide by end of 2011

ABI Research has forecast there'll be 16 million subscribers using LTE mobile devices by the end of 2011.

Commercial LTE services are currently available in twelve countries, covering both mature and emerging markets.

Ofcom announces plans for 4G UK spectrum auction next year

Ofcom has announced plans to auction radio spectrum that'll be used for 4G LTE and WiMAX mobile phone services.

It'll be auctioning two spectrum bands; the old analogue TV bandwidth at 800 MHz, along with a higher-frequency band at 2.6 GHz. Together, these bands are equivalent to three-quarters of the mobile spectrum in use today - and are 80% more than the 3G auction that took place in 2000.

Motorola and Nokia agree licensing agreement for 4G LTE and WiMAX technology

Here's a welcome change from the mobile industry: a licensing agreement instead of legal action.

Motorola and Nokia have extended their existing intellectual property licensing agreement to include 4G technologies, such as LTE, WiMAX and LTE-Advanced. The terms of the agreement are confidential.
