New security threat takes advantage of SIM cards and 'over the air' updates

Karsten Nohl from Berlin-based Security Research Labs has found a way to use ‘over the air’ updates to take over mobile phones.

Although it only affects older SIM cards, he says the security flaw could affect up to 750 million phones worldwide.

European mobile roaming charges drop again from today

The European Union’s Roaming Regulations, which were put in place last May, have caused mobile roaming charges in Europe to fall again today. Charges fell last July and are scheduled to fall again next year.

Although maximum prices for voice calls and text messages are falling slightly, there’s also a dramatic drop in the maximum cost of mobile data usage.

Younger mobile users value data more than text or voice

A report published by research firm Analysys Mason this week shows that younger mobile users (aged 18 to 34) favour data services much more than older consumers.

It notes that more than 40% of these young smartphone owners use IP-based messaging, compared to 20% of users aged 65 and over. In the UK, 53% of 18-24 year olds are using IP-based messaging services.

Americans spend almost an hour every day on their smartphones

The latest Simmons Connect panel from Experian Marketing Services has shown that the average smartphone user in the USA spends 58 minutes on their device every day.

Just over a quarter of this time (26%) is spent talking and another 20% sending text messages.
