Machine-to-machine connections and revenue are below expectations

New research says M2M revenue represents just 0.5% of mobile operator service revenues

A new report from Informa Telecoms & Media says M2M growth is lagging behind industry expectations, with 132 million mobile connections in June and $5.68 billion (£3.5 billion) revenue generated in the previous 12 months.

That’s the equivalent of one M2M connection for every 50 ‘human’ connections and $1 of M2M revenue for every $200 of service revenue.

A fifth of all mobile phone sales will be 4G devices in 5 years

A new report from Pyramid Research expects worldwide 4G LTE handset sales to reach 490.5 million in 2017, which is a compound annual growth rate of 73% over this year’s predicted figures.

It means LTE handsets will account for 20.7% of all handset sales in five years’ time.

Apple iOS 6 maps mocked as iPhone 5 launches

The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system has been heavily criticised for the apparently poor quality of its maps. Apple iOS 6 uses Apple’s own map data, unlike previous versions that were based on Google maps.

Complaints about the Apple map application include out-of-date business data, misplaced towns and incorrectly-placed landmarks.

Microsoft wins injunction in Germany against Motorola Mobility

Microsoft has won a significant patent case in Germany against Google-owned Motorola Mobility.

Judge Dr Peter Guntz said Google’s Android operating system infringes Microsoft’s patent, which refers to a ‘soft input panel system and method’. The patent covers the ability for applications to receive an input from different sources.
