Annual global SMS revenue is expected to fall by £14 billion within five years

Figures from Informa Telecoms & Media show that global annual SMS revenue is expected to fall from $120 billion this year to $96.7 billion by 2018, which is a drop of $23 billion.

This predicted fall is being blamed on the adoption and use of over-the-top (OTT) messaging applications that aren’t controlled by mobile networks.

Europe planning to allow use of mobile devices throughout flights

The European Aviation Safety Agency is planning to publish guidance that’ll allow airlines to permit the use of personal electronic devices in ‘Flight Mode’ during taxiing, take-off and landing as well as throughout commercial flights.

This will cover tablets, smartphones, eBook readers and mp3 players as well as laptops, although heavier devices will need to be stowed safely during take-off and landing.

Motorola launches budget quad-core Android smartphone

Google-owned Motorola has revealed a new smartphone that it describes as ‘an exceptional phone at an exceptional price’.

The Moto G has a 4.5-inch HD screen and runs Android 4.3 on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.

BlackBerry achieves its $1 billion investment

BlackBerry has completed the $1 billion (£622 million) investment it announced earlier this month.

The deal - described as a private placement of convertible debentures - was arranged with shareholder Fairfax Financial Holdings and other investors.

Facebook is a mobile company – are you?

A quick fact: nearly half of Facebook’s advertising revenue now stems from mobile ads.

That’s right – of the social network’s $1.8 billion (£1.1 billion) generated in the third quarter of 2013, 49% of it was made up of mobile advertising revenue. Last year, the channel represented only 14%.
