New EU rules to reserve 800MHz frequencies for high-speed mobile internet

The European Commission has implemented new rules for high-speed mobile internet services. EU members that release 800MHz frequencies as part of the 'digital dividend' resulting from the switchover from analogue to digital television broadcasting are now required to make the frequencies available for wireless broadband applications such as LTE or WiMAX.

Dramatic rise expected in 4G Machine-to-Machine mobile services

In our podcast on 31st March, we talked about Vodafone's partnership with British Gas. 'Smart meters' with a mobile GPRS data connection are expected to help nearly a million UK households manage their gas supplies by the end of 2012.

However, although these meters won't need fast mobile data, ABI Research anticipates a dramatic growth in machine-to-machine connections using 4G services. Its latest report says the number of 4G M2M modules shipped worldwide will jump from around 40,000 this year to 12.6 million in 2015.

Sweden and Norway get world's first commercial 4G service

As O2 UK announces its successful 4G LTE trial, TeliaSonera is launching commercial 4G LTE services to customers in Sweden and Norway – which it says makes it the first network operator in the world to offer a commercial 4G service.

The services cover the central city areas of Stockholm and Oslo and will be used for mobile data.
