Great news for mobile phone users. Ofcom’s new rules preventing unexpected mid-contract price rises came into force last week, which means UK consumers can no longer be surprised by their subscription charge increasing while they’re still locked into a minimum-term deal.

The People's Operator MVNO appoints Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales as co-chair

Virtual mobile network The People’s Operator, which launched in 2012 and passes 25% of its profits to charity, has appointed Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales as a board member and co-chair of the company.

The London-based MVNO says the main role of Mr Wales will be “to drive the growth of a global community that connects as a force for good”. It currently offers SIM-only ‘pay monthly’ and ‘pay as you go’ services in the UK.

Ad-funded UK MVNO Ovivo increases the value of its free mobile tariffs

UK virtual network Ovivo has revised its tariffs for smartphones and tablets. The ad-funded MVNO now offers 200 minutes of UK calls, 300 text messages and 500MB of mobile data every month for no charge on its ‘Freedom 0’ tariff.

Instead of paying a monthly fee, customers are shown online advertisements and will also receive some text message ads.

UK virtual network giffgaff starts selling phones

UK virtual network giffgaff, which launched four years ago as a SIM-only service, has started selling mobile phones directly to customers.

The Telefonica-backed company is offering a range of 20 unlocked handsets that can be bought outright or with a finance scheme for between six months and two years.

Virgin Media extends its virtual network agreement with EE

Virgin Media has agreed that EE will continue to provide the network for its Virgin Mobile MVNO.

It’s an extension of the virtual network agreement that dates back to Virgin Mobile’s launch with T-Mobile in 1999.
