Teardown reveals Samsung Galaxy Tab is much like a giant Galaxy S smartphone

iSuppli has just revealed its preliminary hardware analysis of the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tablet.

The so-called 'teardown' shows the Galaxy Tab having a very similar design to the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone. Both have a Samsung-branded Hummingbird 1GHz ARM-based processor and an Infineon baseband processor.

IMImobile takes over mobile services company WIN plc

IMImobile, one of India's largest and fastest-growing mobile technology companies, has acquired UK-based mobile content and services provider WINplc. The resulting company will have a global workforce of over 600 people. Former WIN CEO Graham Rivers will become an Executive Director of IMImobile.

TomTom deal puts its maps on HTC phones

TomTom and HTC have done a deal that'll put navigation and location solutions on HTC smartphones. The new HTC Locations mapping application – preinstalled on the new HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z smartphones, with other devices expected to be added in the future – will come preloaded with TomTom’s maps. The option of turn-by-turn navigation can be purchased through HTC Locations or on HTCSense.com

90% of the world's population now has access to a mobile network

The International Telecommunication Union, which looks after information and communication technology issues for the United Nations, has calculated that 90% of the world population has access to mobile networks. It's one of the figures from the agency's The World in 2010 report.

NCR acquires Mobiqa

Technology company NCR – probably best-known for its cash registers and ATMs – has acquired mobile content optimisation specialists Mobiqa. Edinburgh-based Mobiqa uses SMS, MMS, web links and email to deliver barcoded tickets – including airline boarding passes - to mobile phones. NCR, although based in the USA, has an R&D facility 60 miles away in Dundee.
