Samsung has paid Microsoft $1 billion in Android royalties

Figures from court documents show that Samsung paid Microsoft around $1 billion (£622 million) in a year to use the Android operating system.

The two companies signed a patent licensing agreement in 2011, with Samsung agreeing to pay Microsoft, although the amount was undisclosed at the time.

Apple and Samsung dominate tablet sales while manufacturers battle for third place

Although ​Apple and Samsung lead the market for tablet sales, there’s an increasing battle for third place. That’s the conclusion of a new report from ABI Research.

It says competition for the space behind Apple and Samsung is currently between Lenovo, Amazon, Asus and other ‘emerging’ vendors.

Over two thirds of mobile ads are seen on Samsung and Apple devices

Millennial Media has used data from its mobile advertising platform, which processes billions of mobile ad requests every month, and compiled them in a new Mobile Mix study that focuses on the Europe, Middle East, and Africa device markets.

It reports that 81% of the European population has a mobile phone, with 42% owning smartphones. The overall figures for EMEA are 65% mobile penetration and 25% with a smartphone.

New phablets and a virtual reality headset from Samsung

Samsung has used the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin to announce two new mobile devices and a virtual reality headset.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the latest version of the company’s stylus-controlled phone/tablet hybrid. It’s equipped with a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a 16 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 3.7 megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera.
