Microsoft co-founder takes legal action against major online businesses

A company called Interval Licensing LLC has filed a complaint for patent infringement against AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo! and YouTube. The name may not be familiar but Interval Licensing is owned and controlled by Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates. It generated approximately 300 patents in less than a decade – and four of those patents are the basis for the legal action.

New Alcatel mobile phone preloaded with Yahoo services

TCT Mobile, the company behind the Alcatel mobile phone brand, has announced the Alcatel One Touch Net handset. It's designed for emerging markets and is preloaded with a suite of Yahoo!'s products, including Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Homepage, Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Social Pulse, Flickr and Yahoo! Address Book and Calendar.

The Alcatel One Touch Net phone has a QWERTY keyboard and is equipped with a 2.4-inch screen, an 80MB memory, a 2 megapixel camera, an MP3 player, FM radio and stereo Bluetooth technology. It's due in Q3 2010.

Nokia Ovi Mail now has 10 million email accounts

Nokia's Ovi Mail free email service now has 10 million activated accounts. The company admits that many people already have multiple email accounts but points out that Ovi Mail is particularly useful in parts of the world where mobile phones are more popular than PCs. It says 7 of the top 10 countries activating Ovi Mail accounts are in emerging markets, including Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, China, Kenya and Nigeria.

Later this year Ovi Mail is expected to be co-branded as "powered by Yahoo!".

New partnership between Yahoo! and Nokia

Yahoo! and Nokia have announced a 'worldwide strategic alliance' after five years of working together. The companies say they will use each others' strengths in email, instant messaging, maps and navigation services to provide consumers with 'world-class experiences' on PCs and mobile devices.

• Yahoo!'s maps will now be branded as "powered by Ovi", with Nokia becoming the exclusive provider of Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services.
• Ovi's chat and email services will now be provided by Yahoo! and branded as "Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!"
• Both companies aim to eventually let consumers use a single Ovi/Yahoo! username across their services.
