European Commission plans to remove roaming charges and protect net neutrality

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has used his 2013 ‘State of the Union’ speech today to announce plans to reduce phone charges, cut red tape and introduce new consumer rights.

The main parts of the ‘Connected Continent’ package include banning incoming mobile phone call charges while travelling in the EU from July 2014 and cutting the cost of international telephone calls within Europe.

Three UK has announced a deal called ‘Feel At Home’ that’ll see customers being charged at their standard tariff rate when they visit certain countries.

The service is available automatically when customers use their mobile phones in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy and Sweden.

Although the European Union has created a ‘single market’, Europe’s mobile phone users aren’t seeing the benefits they might expect.

Vodafone plans 4G UK launch on 29th August

Vodafone UK has announced that it’ll be launching its 4G mobile data service in the UK on 29th August 2013; the same day as O2 launches 4G on its own network.

SIM-only 4G deals will cost from £26 per month, while 24-month price plans with a 4G phone will cost from £34 a month.
