New webOS tablet, Pre3 and mini-smartphone announced by HP

HP announced three new webOS devices last night, almost a year after acquiring device manufacturer Palm.

The HP TouchPad is a WiFi & 3G tablet (or ‘slate’) device that’s expected to arrive this summer. It boasts a 9.7-inch multitouch display, support for Adobe Flash Player and a front-facing camera. Amazon has already promised a free Kindle app tailored for the TouchPad.

The HP Pre3 - due this summer - has a larger keyboard and better screen resolution than previous Pre devices. It’ll run a 1.4-GHz Qualcomm processor and also has a forward-facing camera for video calling.

Finally, the HP Veer is a small smartphone described as being about the size of a credit card. (54.5 mm x 84.0 mm x 15.1 mm). There’s a slide-out keyboard, an 800MHz processor and 8GB of built-in storage behind the 2.57-inch display. It’s expected to start selling in the early Spring.

Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager of HP’s Palm Global Business Unit, said “Today we're embarking on a new era of webOS with the goal of linking a wide family of HP products through the best mobile experience available. The flexibility of the webOS platform makes it ideal for creating a range of innovative devices that work together to keep you better connected to your world.”
