The frequency of text messaging among American teenagers has shot up in the past year-and-a-half. In February 2008, 38% of teens texted their friends every day – but by September 2009 it was 54%.

When it comes to quantity, 87% of teens with mobile phones use text messaging at least occasionally. Half of teens send 50 or more text messages a day, with a third sending more than 100 texts a day.

The figures come from the Pew Research Center, which contacted 800 teenagers aged 12 to 17 years old. 75% of them owned mobile phones, up from 45% in 2004.
