You wait forever for an augmented reality application… and then two come along in the same week. Hot on the heels of Dutch browser Layar comes some new technology from IBM. The computer giant provides most of the behind-the-scenes I.T. wizardry for the Wimbledon tennis championships and has created a beta program for Android phones called IBM Seer. When this year’s event starts you’ll be able to point your Android-powered smartphone’s camera at key locations inside the Wimbledon complex and it’ll overlay on-screen information to let you know what you’re seeing and what’s happening there.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough excitement from IBM, it’s also just committed to spending $100 million on mobile communications research over the next five years in a bid to bring more PC-type services to mobile devices.
