Nokia has released a new smartphone that runs ‘Nokia X’, the mobile software platform based on the Android Open Source Project. However, the device is unlikely to be offered by high-street retailers in the UK.
The Nokia X2 is expected to sell for €99 SIM-free (£79+VAT). It’s the first Android-powered device released by Nokia since the company’s mobile division was acquired by Microsoft.
Technical specs include a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch display, 5 megapixel camera and dual-SIM capability. Microsoft apps including Skype, Outlook.com and OneDrive are loaded on the device during manufacture, along with Nokia’s HERE Maps and MixRadio.
The OS has been improved alongside the hardware, with a ‘home’ key and task manager now available.
This new version of the Nokia X software platform won’t be available on the company’s previous Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL devices, although the company says they will receive other updates in the future.
