Samsung has announced that it’s the first smartphone provider accredited for joyn ‘Blackbird’.

Blackbird is the latest version of the GSMA’s joyn service, which was launched in 2012. It’s a standard for inter-network Rich Communication Services, such as messaging, video sharing and file transfer during voice calls.

Samsung will begin offering joyn Blackbird-based services on its Galaxy S4 and S5 smartphones in Germany and Spain by the end of this year, with a rollout to France, UK and Italy also planned. The joyn website currently shows Vodafone as the only UK network supporting RCS.

J K Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics, said “RCS is a progressive and important technology that is transforming the future of mobile communication. As a market leader in technology, Samsung continues to differentiate itself by providing our customers with the most advanced mobile communications software and solutions available.”
