There’s a new low-price Android tablet in town. The Datawind UbiSlate 7Ci, which is being described as the world’s cheapest tablet, is a consumer version of the Aakash-2 device designed for schools and universities in India.

It runs a version of Android v4.0.3 on a 1GHz chip and has a 7-inch 800 x 400 pixel display. Although the 7Ci is WiFi-only, there’ll also be a WiFi+3G version (the 7C+) for £69.99 and a higher-spec 7-inch phablet for £129.99.

Datawind was named as the UK’s most innovative company in the SmartUK competition last year.

We spoke to Suneet Singh Tuli, Datawind’s CEO, back in 2009 when the company was preparing to launch its new PocketSurfer web browsing device. You can listen to the interview via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.
