Almost one in ten UK children own a mobile phone at the age of 5, says new survey

A newly-published report has shown that the average child gets their first mobile phone at the age of 11 years and 8 months old.

However, 9% of children - an estimated 1,178,100 in the UK - are bought their first phone at the age of 5.

British ethnic minorities are more likely to have mobile phones, notes Ofcom report

New research from UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has revealed that consumers from ethnic minority groups are more likely to be using communications technology than the average British person.

People from ethnic minority groups are more likely to have home broadband and a mobile phone, according to the report, although they are less likely to watch TV and listen to the radio.

New hybrid smartwatch beats its crowd-funding target within 24 hours

A smartwatch project on crowd-funded site Kickstarter has exceeded its $100,000 (£64,000) financial target in the first day of its 30-day funding window.

The Omate TrueSmart is designed to connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth or WiFi and can also become a stand-alone mobile phone if a SIM card is fitted.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has announced his intention to retire as CEO within the next 12 months.

He was the company’s first business manager and was promoted to a number of positions before becoming CEO in 2000.
