Amazon's new Kindle ebook reader can be pre-ordered from the UK

A new Amazon Kindle ebook reader has been announced by the online retailer. The new Kindle offers better contrast, a faster response when turning pages, extra storage and built-in WiFi. There's a 3G+WiFi version for £149 (which includes all 3G charges) or a WiFi-only version for £109.

TalkTalk arranges UK mobile phone deal on the Vodafone network

Broadband and fixed-line telephone provider TalkTalk – once part of The Carphone Warehouse – is preparing to launch its own mobile phone service on the Vodafone network. It's expected to offer 'pay monthly' voice and mobile broadband tariffs to its customers from the autumn.

Mobile phone security can now be checked with DIY kit

Security researcher Karsten Nohl has released a software program called Airprobe that makes it much easier for people to test security (and potentially listen to calls) on their chosen mobile network. Airprobe enables users to record and then decode GSM mobile phone calls when used in conjunction with a computer, additional radio equipment and tables of data.

Antennagate takes some of the shine off the iPhone, says research

London-based market research company Opinium has been talking to UK consumers following well-reported problems with Apple's iPhone 4. It found that 57% of consumers in the UK were aware of the recent 'Antennagate' iPhone issues reported in the press. 42% of people disagreed with the statement that Apple produces fault free mobile phones and 50% agreed that Apple’s mobile phones are too expensive for what they are.

Telefonica publishes half-year results for O2

­Telefónica Europe, which runs O2 in the UK, says revenue reached €7.28 billion in the first half of 2010, up 10.8% year-on-year. It now has a total of 54.5 million customers in Europe, up 6.1% year-on-year. 45.2 million of these are on its mobile networks.

Telefonica O2 UK'S customer base (excluding Tesco Mobile) increased 4.5% year-on-year to 21.6 million at the end of June. The number of 'contract' customers was up 11.7% year-on-year.
