Hannu Verkasalo, a doctoral student at Helsinki University of Technology, has conducted research to see which features are used most on mobile phones. His dissertation - Handset-Based Analysis of Mobile Service Usage – is published tomorrow.

It reveals that the usage of smartphone applications (browsing, games, multimedia, mapping etc) accounts for 40% of ‘face time’, although most smartphone usage is still voice and text messaging. 31% of smartphone users use mobile email, 70% use MMS and 72% browse the mobile internet. However, the most typical reason for using smartphone features is to ‘kill time’, not for productivity. [Source: ScienceDaily.com]
