The GSMA, which represents more than a thousand companies in the mobile communications industry, has published a report that says licensing the 2.6 GHz band is a vital part of satisfying the demand for greater mobile broadband capacity.

“There is clear evidence that the volume of data flowing over mobile networks is growing rapidly and is being accelerated by the popularity of smart phones and the growth in music and video downloads,” said Tom Phillips, Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer at the GSMA.

After a series of delays, Ofcom currently intends to auction the UK's 2.6GHz frequency band as part of the 'Digital Britain' plans, although no date has been fixed.
