A former prisoner is suing the prison service for destroying his mobile phone during a police dog training session. Mark Coleman was found to have a Samsung D500 handset when he was searched, which is against UK prison rules. He was punished and the phone was taken away from him. The mobile phone was later used (and chewed) in a dog training session. Mr Coleman is claiming that the authorities at Wayland Prison should have returned the phone and should not have deprived him of his property; a previous claim to the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman rules that the phone should have been returned but giving compensation for a smuggled, illegal device was inappropriate.
