Jailbreaking an iPhone - removing Apple's restrictions so that owners can add software that doesn't come from Apple's own online shop - infringes copyright, according to Apple. As a result, digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation have asked the US Copyright Office to exempt this aspect of the iPhone from the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) in order to allow iPhone owners to use applications that aren't available from Apple's store. As the EFF points out, it's rather like a car manufacturer not only recommending that you use their parts for servicing but also welding the bonnet shut. [EFF blog]
