NTT Docomo plans a smartphone for children in Japan

NTT Docomo says it’s working on a mobile phone that’s aimed specifically at pre-teen children and teenagers who are upper elementary and junior high school students in japan. The Smartphone for Juniors SH-05E is being manufactured by Sharp and will go on sale in early February.

Phone usage can be restricted by the child’s parents based on the time of day, amount of time used and web content viewed. Calls and email messages can be restricted to selected contacts, while downloading and using apps can also be controlled.

The smartphone is also equipped with an alarm that’ll automatically call a chosen contact. It comes with preinstalled content and applications designed exclusively for preteens.

Sharp’s Smartphone for Juniors SH-05E is a water-resistant and dustproof Android smartphone, includes a 12.1 megapixel camera and runs a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. It’ll be available on a flat-rate tariff for 2,980 yen (£20.75) per month.
