LG Electronics formally announced its latest flagship smartphone yesterday following a number of pre-announcements and rumours.

The LG G2 introduces LG’s new ‘G’ prefix for premium devices.

Rather than having control buttons on the edges, the LG G2 has all these buttons on the rear of the device. According to LG, this makes the phone less likely to be dropped during calls.

It runs Android on Qualcomm’s 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and has a 5.2-inch (1080 x 1920 pixel) display, along with a 13 megapixel camera that benefits from optical image stabilisation.

Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said “Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers. We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation. We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company’s history.”

Availability is expected in South Korea by the end of September, followed by Europe and North America.
