Market research company GfK Retail and Technology says Android’s share of European smartphone sales quadrupled in 2010. At the start of the year Android accounted for 5% of total European sales; by the end of the year it was in over 25% of all smartphones sold.

Similar growth rates have been seen in other regions. Android‘s market share in Asia rose from 3% in Q1 2010 to 31% by Q4 2010, while in the Latin America region the share increased from 4% to 22% during the same period.

Aaron Rattue, GfK’s Global Telco Marketing Director, said “With the smartphone market becoming increasingly competitive, the potential impact of new tablet propositions and a growing number of applications, Android looks well placed to maintain market share for the coming months.”
