In January this year, Apple acquired mobile advertising business Quattro Wireless. It's believed Apple paid around $275 million, although an official figure was never reported. At the time Quattro said there'd be no changes to its services in the short-term.

Since then, Apple has used Quattro Wireless to build its new iAd platform – and it's now closing down the Quattro Wireless network from 30th September. From that date, the company's advertisers will only be able to place ads within applications on Apple iOS devices.

A statement on the Quattro Wireless website said "The iAd Network combines the emotion of TV advertising with the interactivity of the web, giving advertisers a powerful new way to reach mobile users. We believe iAd is the best mobile ad network in the world, and starting next month we're going to focus all of our resources on the iAd advertising platform."
