Cloud communications company Twilio has launched Twilio Voice in the UK and has opened an office in London. It means developers can use Twilio’s Application Programming Interface to build web and mobile applications that can make and receive telephone calls via UK telephone numbers.

The company has also launched a beta service in Poland, France, Portugal, Austria and Denmark, with an additional 11 countries launching by the end of the year.

Jeff Lawson, Twilio CEO and co-founder, said “International functionality has been among our top customer requested features since the company launched almost three years ago. Through our powerful APIs we enable developers to build fantastic, innovative products. We estimate there are more than 10 million software developers worldwide, and we look forward to serving a greater number of them than ever before from our European headquarters in London. ”

Twilio also announced its first major European customer: customer support software provider Zendesk. Its cloud-based Zendesk Voice service lets UK users set up cloud-based call centres at a fraction of the cost of traditional set-ups.

California-based Twilio currently serves more than 60,000 developers globally with customers including eBay, Sony and Linkedin.
