HTC has announced its new flagship smartphone today. This is the replacement for the HTC One and it’s called the HTC One M8, which could get a little confusing. At least it’s not the HTC One 2.

The new phone runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) on a Qualcomm SnapDragon quad-core 2.3GHz processor. It has an aluminium body that’s slimmer than its predecessor (9.35mm deep) yet it packs in a larger 5-inch display (1920 x 1080 pixels). Weight is 160g.

Inside is 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in memory and a MicroSD slot.

There’s a 5 megapixel camera on the front and two camera lenses on the back, with the smaller lens used for faster focussing and special effects. The main camera sticks with the larger ‘UltraPixel’ sensor of the original HTC One, delivering 4 megapixel images, although performance has been improved and there are many new photo features.

Stereo speakers are on the front of the device, as with the original HTC One, and these are more powerful than the previous version.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the new phone is available in some UK and US retailers today. A Google Play version without the HTC Sense user interface will also be introduced.
