Microsoft is replacing its instant messaging platform with Skype, the online telecom platform it took over in 2011. Windows Live Messenger - originally known as MSN Messenger - is expected to be ‘retired’ in early 2013, although customers in China will still be able to use the service after that.

Messenger users can now log in to their messaging account via the latest version of Skype. Skype’s video calling and fixed-line calling will be available to these users in addition to Microsoft’s conventional IM services.

Customers already using Skype can merge their Skype and Messenger accounts into a single Microsoft account.
