Basingstoke-based mobile ticketing specialist Trinity Mobile has seen its highest-ever year-on-year growth for the delivery of mobile boarding passes to airline passengers. In 2009 it recorded over 600,000 mobile boarding passes being sent to passengers via mobile text messages, up from just 50,000 in 2008. Trinity Mobile says the 1200% year-on-year increase was driven almost entirely by customer choice, with passengers simply choosing to receive a bar-coded mobile boarding pass instead of printing details at home.

The company is currently working with over 100 retailers, airlines, rail & bus companies and leisure & entertainment providers across Europe. Its airline customers include Austrian Airlines and British Midlands Airways (BMI).

Rob Clegg, Commercial Director at Trinity Mobile, said "The massive growth in mobile ticketing is completely driven by the consumer’s need for the fastest, easiest and most affordable way to get tickets. Our technology has proven to deliver these enhanced customer services efficiently, securely and cost effectively, and has the added benefit of being environmentally friendly."

A recent report from Juniper Research forecast that over 15 billion mobile tickets would be issued worldwide by 2014, up from 2 billion expected this year.
