Motorola, which launched its first Android-powered smartphone last year, has just announced a replacement for the flagship device.
The 2009 launch of the Motorola DROID was seen by many as a turning point for the company. This phone was renamed the Motorola Milestone when it arrived in Europe.
DROID 2 has been revealed in the USA this week. The standard version will sell from 12th August in Verizon Wireless shops, with a limited-edition Star Wars R2-D2 version selling online from September. DROID 2, which runs Android v2.2, is faster and more powerful than its predecessor. There’s no news yet about any UK release.
Jeffrey Dietel, vice president of wireless device marketing and development for Verizon Wireless, said “The DROID by Motorola was our first Android device, so it is important for us to include the successor to that phone in our portfolio. DROID 2 is not only a continuation of our commitment to Android but offers customers the features and form-factor they crave on the Verizon Wireless network.”
