Regulator Ofcom has announced new rules that are designed to protect consumers from being mis-sold landline and mobile phone services. The new proposals cover slamming (switching a customer to another fixed-line telephone provider without their permission), mobile cashback and other general aspects of sales. Ofcom says it currently receives around 200 complaints a month about mobile phone mis-selling, although cashback complaints have fallen from 400 per month in early 2008 to 28 last December. The new rules come into effect from September; providers that breach the rules could be fined up to 10% of relevant turnover. [Press release; PDF mobile mis-selling statement]
