Newcastle City Council has announced plans to introduce free WiFi to the city centre. It’ll be available to visitors and residents across the city, in public buildings, on streets and potentially also on Newcastle’s Metro railway system.

The free WiFi service is part of a government scheme called Go Digital Newcastle, which will also see the introduction of superfast fibre broadband to the city by 2015, a cloud computing centre and business support.

Around £9 million of public funding is being put into the Go Digital Newcastle scheme, including money from the government’s Super Connected Cities programme. A total of £150 million has been earmarked to create 22 ‘super connected cities’ across the UK.
