Ofcom has published proposals about the introduction of a national non-emergency shortcode for healthcare calls. It's considering the introduction of 111 as a telephone number to contact the Department of Health when the situation is urgent but is not an emergency. Responses to its proposals need to be submitted by 20th August. Currently 111 is only planned for England, although similar services may be considered for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Incidentally, this is probably the first Ofcom document to include the phrase "bum call": what is now clearly the official description for inadvertently making a telephone call when your mobile phone is in the back pocket of your jeans.
