Ofcom has published a consultation about the radio frequencies used to deliver 2G and 3G services in the UK: the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2.1GHz spectrum bands. It’s related to the Government’s recent Digital Britain Interim Report, which asked the industry to decide the future of the 2G spectrum by the end of April 2009. The consultation sets out suggestions for allocating the mobile spectrum if the networks don’t reach an agreement by the end of April. It recommends allowing 3G technology to use the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands, which would improve mobile data coverage, and would require Vodafone and O2 to give up part of the 900 MHz spectrum they currently hold in order that it could be auctioned to a third operator.
