The latest Ofcom Telecommunications Market Data Tables for the first quarter of 2009 reveal mixed fortunes for the UK’s four largest mobile networks.
It shows that total revenue across Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile fell by 3.7% year-on-year (between Q1 2008 and Q1 2009); however, total call volumes increased by 6.8% year-on-year to 25.7 billion minutes. UK calls were up 7.1% and international calls were up 9.0%, although roaming call volumes were 13.6% lower than in Q1 2008.
There was also an increase in messaging; volume was up 26.1% year-on-year, although it was up just 4% from the previous quarter. Customers are now sending an average
104 messages per month. Finally, there was a year-on-year increase of 1% in subscriber numbers, although this was 1% down on Q4 2009. [PDF report]
