Samsung Electronics has announced a new naming strategy for its Galaxy range of smartphones. There’ll be five different classes of device, each identified by a single letter. A ‘class indicator’ will then provide more information.

S (Super Smart) devices are Samsung’s flagship mobile products.

R (Royal / Refined) will be premium category models, combining power, performance and productivity.

W (Wonder) are high-quality models for those “seeking a balance between style and performance”.

M (Magical) are “high-performance models at an economic price-point”.

Y (Young) are entry-level models, strategic devices for emerging markets or aimed at a price-sensitive younger audience.

The class indicators are ‘Pro’ for a QWERTY keyboard, ‘Plus’ to indicate an upgrade from an existing model and ‘LTE’ for compatibility with the 4G standard.

JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, said “As Samsung continues to innovate, our goal is to provide consumers with an experience uniquely tailored to their needs. We have introduced steps to ensure users can simply identify the device designed to deliver the perfect experience for them.”

In addition, Samsung has revealed four new Galaxy smartphones;  the Galaxy W, Galaxy M Pro, Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro. All will run Android v2.3.
