The announcement from a Samsung senior vice-president that the company would be dropping support for the Symbian platform has been softened – but not denied. Samsung has now issued a statement that says "Samsung is an initial member of Symbian Foundation and continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation. At the same time, Samsung supports various existing open operating systems including Symbian, Linux, Android, and Windows Mobile."

It goes on to say that Samsung has a 'multi-OS' strategy to to provide consumers with what they want. [Source: MobileBurn.com]

Samsung originally offered detailed figures and graphs, showing how it would phase out Symbian and Windows Mobile by about 2012.

Now Samsung is softening its statements. I think it wants to save face with Microsoft (not upset them too much), and also not alarm the public. Samsung still has some Symbian and Windows Mobile phones on the market, which it needs to sell, before they are phased out. If it tells the public that these phones are a dead-end, then it will be hard to sell them.

But it is obvious to all that Samsung is going to phase out both Symbian and Windows Mobile phones. These two phone platforms will soon be obsolete.

Samsung will move to Android for its most expensive phones, and its own 'bada' operating system for cheaper phones. I personally think its Android phones will be more popular, as Android has generated a lot of excitement, being backed by Google.
