Assuming everything goes to plan, the new combined T-Mobile and Orange UK business will have 37% of the UK’s mobile phone customers (based on the most recent Ofcom figures). It’ll be followed by O2 with 28%, Vodafone with 23%, Virgin Mobile with 6.2% and 3 with 5.8%.

Combining the businesses will cost up to £800 million between 2010 and 2014 but will also save £620 million – and will then save around £100 million every year from 2015. A decision on the new brand will be made in the second-half of 2011 and will be implemented in 2012.

Tom Alexander, who’s currently CEO at Orange UK, will be CEO of the new venture with Richard Moat (currently MD at T-Mobile UK) taking the COO role. [France Telecom pdf summary]
