The UK Home Office says it’s working with mobile phone companies to make sure criminals don’t take advantage of NFC mobile payment technology, which allows customers to buy things by swiping their handset over a sensor in a similar way to London Transport’s Oyster cards.

Its guidelines – which have already been implemented in many cases - include requiring any transactions above £10 to require additional verification, such as a PIN code, and using additional security if more than a certain number of transactions are carried out within a certain time. In addition, users will be encouraged to add their details on the National Mobile Phone Register. [News release]
