Although Nokia's big announcement this morning wasn't the DRM-free switch that many had hoped for, there is another big name moving away from Digital Rights Management today. Vodafone has done a deal with Universal Music, Sony Music and EMI to change its music catalogue to DRM-free MP3 versions on mobile phones and PCs. This means that consumers will be able to play music downloaded from the Vodafone Music Store on any compatible digital device. Vodafone customers who've previously bought protected WMA tracks will be able to upgrade ther music "within the existing download allowance" (which presumably means there'll just be data usage - if any - to pay for). The change will be in place in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and New Zealand by the summer. [Press release]
