ZTE has confirmed it’ll be producing a smartphone that uses Mozilla’s HTML5-based Firefox mobile operating system. The new handset is called the ZTE Open and will launch on the Telefónica network in Spain, Venezuela and Colombia later this year.
With a 3.5-inch screen and a 3.2 megapixel camera, the ZTE Open is an entry-level smartphone aimed at younger people and those upgrading from a feature phone.
Brendan Eich, co-founder and CTO of Mozilla, said “ZTE has moved very quickly and has worked closely with us to develop a robust Mozilla Firefox OS smartphone. Firefox OS brings powerful open Web technologies to the smartphone market, giving users more choice and more options that reflect their lifestyle.”
Also revealed yesterday was the ZTE Grand Memo, a mobile device that’s just 8.5mm deep but has a 5.7-inch screen. It runs Android on a quad-core 1.7GHz chip and includes a 13 megapixel camera plus a 3200mAh battery. However, regional versions may have different specifications.
Availability for the Grand Memo is expected in Q2 2013.
