Huawei says it’s successfully run the world’s first GSM-LTE Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (GL DSS) trial with Vodafone Spain. It’s a technology that allows real-time changes to be made to the allocation of frequencies for 3G GSM and 4G LTE traffic.

GSM is given higher priority in periods of heavy traffic, protecting against the risk of interference to voice calls, while LTE can be given additional spectrum when appropriate. The trial delivered LTE capacity gains of up to 50%.

The reason for trialling GL DSS is the worldwide demand for LTE spectrum. For example; Vodafone currently holds 20MHz of 1.8GHz spectrum, of which 10MHz is used for LTE and the rest for high GSM traffic.
