EE is reported to be discontinuing its Orange and T-Mobile tariffs for new connections and upgrades, according to Mobile News. Although existing customers can continue with their Orange and T-Mobile deals, they’ll now need to move to an EE tariff if they want to upgrade.

The trade newspaper says EE stopped offering the two brands from 2nd February and has told its indirect sales partners to stop by 2nd March 2015.

It quotes Marc Allera, EE’s Chief Commercial Officer, as saying more than 92% of all the company’s recent connections were on EE tariffs. “It has been something we have discussed for many months now, but we didn’t feel it would be right to push the button on the activity until we had a 90 per cent or more mix of customers opting for EE.”

That’s not far short of a quarter of the total workforce. The company is going to focus on mobile network infrastructure and services, with a particular emphasis on mobile broadband, and is likely to sell off other parts of the business.

Having read some of last week’s headlines, you might think the UK’s Communication Ombudsman has told mobile phone networks not to describe their data tariffs as ‘unlimited’ unless they really are. However, what’s actually happened is that one of the UK’s communication ombudsmen (ombudspeople?) has asked mobile operators to be clear about any limits, to stop unexpectedly high bills from building up and to tell customers before they exceed any limit. Better than nothing but hardly earth-shattering.
