ExclusiveMobile network operators expected to make more money from app downloads

A new forecast from Informa Telecoms & Media expects mobile operators to increase their share of app revenues from 10% last year to 17% in 2016. However, they’ll also see their share of mobile content and commerce revenue drop from 44% in 2011 to 31% in 2016.

Although many services including mobile entertainment and messaging are going ‘over the top’, avoiding direct payments to networks, the adoption of carrier billing for paid app downloads will help to offset this lost revenue.

ExclusiveNew forecast expects 16 times more mobile data within five years

A new study from iGR predicts that amount of mobile data traffic worldwide will reach 7 million terabytes per month by 2016; a figure that’s 16 times bigger than last year’s mobile data usage. Global mobile data traffic in 2011 averaged 433,000 terabytes per month.

The figures include all mobile data networks, including 3G and 4G LTE, but exclude any WiFi traffic that’s been offloaded by mobile networks.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has published details of the complaints it’s received during the first three months of this year. It’s the fifth edition of quarterly data from the regulator; the current publication includes statistics about mobile phone, fixed-line telephone, fixed broadband and Pay TV providers.

As in previous quarters, mobile telephony generates a lower level of complaints than fixed-line voice and broadband services.
