London Underground WiFi will remain free for the rest of the year

Virgin Media says its WiFi service on the London Underground is to remain free for the rest of this year. The service was originally expected to introduce ‘pay as you go’ charging after the 2012 Games ended.

It’s also announced that 27th September was the first day Virgin Media’s WiFi service delivered over one million individual online sessions on the Tube - from emails and web pages to Tweets and Facebook posts. Free WiFi is currently available in 72 London Underground Stations and has been used by over 661,000 people since launching in June.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said “WiFi on London Underground has been an incredible success with hundreds of thousands of people kept up-to-date and entertained whilst travelling around our capital city. Commuters and visitors will be able to make use of the internet throughout 2012 and we’re in positive talks with potential wholesale partners to ensure a fantastic experience for all Tube passengers throughout 2012 and beyond.”

Transport for London travel information, updates and local news and entertainment will remain free for all users when charging is introduced next year. Virgin Media’s broadband and mobile subscribers will also continue to have free access to the service.
