Amazon announces new Kindle Fire OS and new tablets

This week Amazon has introduced the third generation of its Kindle Fire tablets. The Kindle Fire HDX family uses new hardware, the latest version of the Android-based Fire OS (nicknamed ‘Mojito’) and a new ‘Mayday’ button for customer service.

Kindle Fire HDXThere are two tablet sizes; one with a 7-inch 323 pixels-per-inch screen and another with an 8.9-inch 339 ppi screen. Both have a quad-core 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, stereo speakers and the option of 4G.

An on-screen ‘Mayday’ button provides a direct connection to Amazon customer support for free help with any tablet feature.

Although both have front-facing cameras, the 8.9-inch tablet also has an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, said “It’s been just two years since we introduced the first Kindle Fire, and the team is innovating at an unbelievable speed. 2.2 GHz processor, 339 ppi display, new 34% lighter design, Fire OS 3.0, and new exclusive features like the Mayday button, X-Ray for Music, Second Screen, and Prime Instant Video downloads. We’ve worked hard to pack this much hardware, innovation, and customer obsession into these prices.”

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX is priced from $229 with US availability from 18th October. UK availability hasn’t been confirmed.
