The UK’s 4G mobile spectrum auction has only just started - but already there’s a second auction being planned. That’s because the Ministry of Defence is selling some of its radio spectrum to raise money; a plan that was announced in the Government’s Spending Review two years ago.
Around 200 MHz of spectrum will be offered at first, with an auction process expected to start in late 2013 and running until mid-2014.
All the spectrum being sold by the MOD is below 15GHz, making it suitable for providing wireless broadband services or for 4G mobile phone services.
Philip Dunne, the Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, said “We welcome this opportunity to free up much-needed spectrum. We hope that the sale will help drive the roll-out of new generation networks and universal access to broadband, both of which are vital to the UK’s prosperity.”
