AOL updates its mobile web site and creates Android apps

Aol.Internet services company AOL Inc has revealed a new mobile website at m.aol.com and is also launching a couple of Android applications. The news comes a month after ex-Palm man David Temkin joined as the company’s new Vice President of Mobile.

AOL’s smartphone portal works on any mobile browser and uses HTML5 to make it easy for consumers to browse through information, apps and multimedia content. One of the Android apps offers content from AOL sites, the other is a share-tracking service.

David Temkin said "Android has emerged as a top-tier smartphone platform. So, while we’ll continue to focus on development for multiple mobile platforms, this time, we are releasing an early version of an app on Android first – the AOL app. We’re also releasing DailyFinance, one of the most popular apps on other platforms, on Android. Today’s smartphones offer a completely different experience from the previous generation of WAP-based sites, and AOL will be taking full advantage of the possibilities these new devices can offer, both on the mobile Web and in apps."

AOL, formerly known as America Online, has been around for over 25 years. Its UK internet service provider business was sold to The Carphone Warehouse in 2006, becoming part of the TalkTalk service. More recently, it sold social networking site Bebo just two years after buying it for $850 million.
